The 27th of November is Black Friday this year, and it is also Buy Nothing Day. Buy Nothing Day is celebrated in over 65 countries worldwide, and it is a way to bring the capitalist consumption machine to a grinding – if only momentary – halt. This year in Lincoln I am planning on not only taking part in the lack of consuming, but I am also going to protest at the WalMart on 27th and superior. The idea is that we will all be wearing shirts, or have signs that say something along the lines of "Buy Nothing" ( Don't be afraid to get creative ) Our goal is to alert people and spread what is true.

I'm also going to have 50 or so copies of A Civilians Guide To Direct Action with me hopefully.

You know, a few of us are smart and can explain why your logic fails both macro and mirco economics; however, we're also lazy.

It's not really about getting anything done economically immediately. It's about not supporting a system that gives all the power to the people who own capitol, and letting people know that we don't support it. Everything we buy has an impact on the environment. The developed countries - only 20% of the world population are consuming over 80% of the earth's natural resources, causing a disproportionate level of environmental damage and an unfair distribution of wealth. It's about a fight for freedom. I know that this alone won't accomplish anything, that is hardly ever the idea of any protest.

If your not down with the cause thats cool too, I respect other peoples opinions. I just thought that a DIY forum would take interest in something like this.

Why shouldn't the people who own capital have a larger share to "power"?

BTW, you know what the scientific term is for a person who falls below the 50th percential in socio-economic standing?

People shouldn't be able to run peoples lives just because they own something, honestly I don't think that any one should run any one else's lives, but I realize that is asking a lot.  

I'm not claiming to know a lot about Socio-economics, but I thought Egalitarianism is used to describe natural society back when people were hunters and gatherers. Society with out hierarchy where everyone has a voice, ect. I wasn't aware of it's application to people in socio-economics.

I have to say this. It is very important that we stay updated with our econmony and government. however there are many kids in this world who only recieve gifts and such on xmas and their bdays. for them I support black friday shopping.

christmas is a christian holiday. many people who celebrate it do not worship God. that to me is terrible. also churchs try to boycott buying so much, and they say to give to charities and others. in my eyes, everyday should be a day for others. not the ONE time a year where you recieve presents

Yeah that's part of the reason I don't celebrate any holidays, or accept gifts from people. I instead give gifts on random days of the year. People feel a lot better when it's a random gift anyway.

I can see where this person is coming from, posting this on a diy forum and all. And I think its duimb to attack him or call him stupid for doing this, even if you disagree. Atleast he's doing something, which is a lot more then most of the kids on here do. But then again this is an internet forum, where people come just to post their oponions, so it all just depends on who cares and who dosnt, but if you care enough to make jokes and little smart ass comments, then go be a prick somewhere else.

A few people outside of a lincoln walmart, or any walmart world wide, or multiple walmarts worldwide, arent going to stop the sales in walmart, nor influence people not to shop on black friday.  But per se this all works out, what do you do after this day?  Do all the protesters go back to buying shit from walmart? well that would just be buying into the capitalist machine.  So say after the protest is over, you still don't buy from walmart.  Well what damage have you really done if you dont buy from walmart for a day, if you dont buy from walmart in the first place?

This isnt about fighting capitalism, this is about jumping on the cliche "big buisness sucks" bandwagon.  It makes you feel like youre stickin it to someone. but the workers at walmart, they dont care.  Have you ever taken a good look at the people that work at walmart? They dont give a shit.

And honestly, when the economy is this fucked up, you even need to put investment into fucked up stupid corporations like walmart, while it sucks, NOT buying from places like these fucks things up even more.

While I agree with most ofwhat you said, explain why NOT buying stuff from big corporations will fuck shit up? So supporting small/local business will mess stuff up?

I don't buy from WalMart Period, so you are right It's not anything new. But the more people who get hear about these things, and decide to get involved then the more people actually get into this kind of stuff, which is a really great thing. I'll admit there is a "I hate big buisness" bandwagon, and a year ago you could say that I was on that. But a year ago I wouldn't have taken the initiative to set up a protest because a year ago I wasn't involved with social change as I am now. So I say let the kids join the bandwagon, because like every other bandwagon people will fall off of it eventually, and those who don't fall and stick with it can do a lot of good for what ever said bandwagon is. Besides, it's not like there isn't an "I hate things that are popular or are bandwagons" bandwagon. Economic crisis right now is another popular bandwagon, before that it was the war. It shouldn't matter if it's popular, cool or any of that shit, it's about what's logical and right.

i think a better way to 'stick it to the man' is buying locally, and avoiding black friday sales put on by national and international stores. maybe the black market or a novel idea is having a cool sale that day. why not buy from them?
